Velez tops Union to claim Apertura title

Facundo Ferreyra's brace at the Estadio Jose Amalfitani on Sunday lifted Velez Sarsfield to a 2-0 win over Union, clinching top spot in Argentina's top flight for the Apertura title.

Ferreyra scored twice in the second period of Sunday's affair, opening his account in the 48th minute before putting the win on ice six minutes from time.

The victory sees Velez improve to 38 points, five points clear of second-place Lanus with one match to go.

Union will remain bottom of the table, heading into the final matchday with six points.

Also on Sunday, Arsenal secured a fourth straight win with a 1-0 defeat of Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo came from behind in a 2-1 win over Independiente, River Plate edged Lanus with a 1-0 score thanks to Rodrigo Mora's strike 14 minutes from time, and Belgrano rode Cesar Pereyra's goal in the 67th minute to a 1-0 victory over Tigre.

On Saturday, Godoy Cruz and Quilmes played to a 0-0 draw, Emmanuel Gigliotti bagged a brace in Colon's 3-1 defeat of Argentinos Juniors, and All Boys suffered its second successive league defeat with a 3-1 loss at Racing.

And on Monday, Newell's rolled over Atletico Rafaela in a 3-0 victory and Estudiantes eased past San Martin with a 2-0 win.
