Toshihiro Aoyama scored as Japanese club Sanfrecce Hiroshima opened the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday with a 1-0 win over Auckland City of New Zealand.
In the first match FIFA officially used goal-line technology, Aoyama left no doubt about the lone goal with a dipping long-range shot in the 66th minute.
Hiroshima, the J-League champions, advanced to the quarterfinals to play Al- Ahly of Egypt on Friday. Mexico's Monterrey plays South Korea's Ulsan Hyundai in the other quarterfinal Friday.
England's Chelsea and Brazil's Corinthians received byes into the semifinals.
