Traffic was temporarily halted along Floyd Road at Bonnybrook Way Tuesday after police found a hollowed out grenade in a box of fresh produce.

Two Bonnybrook Way residents discovered the device inside a brown cardboard box about 4:40 p.m. on the street corner. Bomb technician Sgt. John Crump of the Columbus Police Department said he knew what it was as soon as he saw the item among discarded lettuce, bell peppers and coleslaw.

“It was nothing to it,” Crump said. “It was a hole in the bottom of a grenade. It was a novelty item.”

Although the grenade turned out to be harmless, Crump said area residents followed the department’s policy in dealing with such items.

“Our policy is not to touch it,” he said. “Call the bomb squad. They did exactly right.”

Traffic was halted while Crump investigated the scene and took control of the item.
