Valley, Ala., man dead after collision on Bypass

A 78-year-old Valley, Ala., man died today after a head-on collision on the Fairfax Bypass.

Mark Smith was pronounced dead at George H. Lanier Hospital after the 8:57 a.m. accident.

Smith was northbound on the Bypass in a Chevy S-10 pickup when his vehicle was struck head-on by a southbound GMC pickup driven by Robert Sheehan, 23, also of Valley.

After the collision, Smith’s vehicle was knocked on its side. Members of the East Alabama Fire District used the Jaws of Life to free him from the wreckage.

Sheehan was not injured in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the Valley Police Department and the Chambers County Coroner’s Office.
