A man, accused of robbing Subway on Victory Drive and leading police on a chase Tuesday, pleaded not guilty during a Recorder's Court hearing today.

Jared Carswell, 25, is charged with one count of armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during a crime and misdemeanor obstruction of a police officer. Judge Michael Cielinski set no bond on the armed robbery and bound all the charges over to Muscogee Superior Court.

Columbus Police Detective Daniel Lyon said he went to a residence to look for a Ford Crown Victoria shortly after an armed man entered the 4022 Victory Drive sandwich shop and left with cash. A person entering the shop after the 11 a.m. robbery copied the car's tag number because the vehicle almost struck the victim as the suspect fled.

The vehicle was found at the residence. The vehicle left the residence but eventually wrecked at Howe and Blan street and the driver left the vehicle. Lyon said he chased the suspect through some yards before he saw a silver handgun tossed behind a residence.

The gun was a loaded .38-caliber Smith & Wesson. Police also seized $209 from Carswell after he was taken into custody. "He stated he needed money to pay for some bills," Lyon told the judge.

The manager of the shop said she never saw the robber's face because he was wearing a hoodie pulled tight on his face.

In addition to Carswell admitting to the robbery, Lyon said police have surveillance video of the suspect entering the business and taking cash from the manager.
