The left leg of a Luthersville, Ga., man was severed Thursday morning after he swerved to avoid a deer on Highway 54 in Hogansville, the Georgia State Patrol said.

Alexander Brown, 34, was first taken to West Georgia Medical Center before he was transferred to The Medical Center in Columbus for treatment.

Troopers said Brown was traveling west in a Kia Rio about 6:01 a.m. when he swerved to avoid striking a deer. The car went out of control, struck a utility pole and hurled Brown from the vehicle.

The accident occurred about mile from Interstate 85.
