Columbus police arrested a 21-year-old Phenix City man early Saturday for punching an officer who intervened as the suspect attacked someone outside a Broadway night spot, officers said.

They said they saw Laderren Matthews of Phenix City's Magnolia Avenue assault another patron about 3 a.m. outside the Big City Club at 1113 Broadway. When the officers stepped in, Matthews turned and punched one in the face, leaving the officer with a busted, swollen lip, they said.

They said Matthews kept cursing and threatening police as they took him into custody. He was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing police, they said.
