Miss Alabama USA 2012 Katherine Webb, who is dating University of Alabama starting quarterback AJ McCarron, got some airtime on ESPN early in Monday's BCS Championship Game.

Webb was raised in the Columbus-Phenix City area and graduated from Auburn University. She was in Florida watching McCarron and his teammates play against Notre Dame.

About 30 minutes into the game, the camera turned to Webb and we got these, um, interesting comments from sportscaster Brent Musburger. (Video via Larry Brown Sports)

UPDATE: ESPN has apologized for Musburger's comments. Read the statement here.

The clip spawned lots of commentary on Twitter, where Webb gained tens of thousands of new followers by halftime. Some of the tweets:

"Get NBC's Chris Hansen on the phone. Brent Musburger is coming close to 'To Catch a Predator' territory w/McCarron's girlfriend." (@ChuckyT3)

"I preferred it when Brent Musburger was infatuated with the Honey Badger. His new obsessions are...troubling." (@kyle_york)

"Ok, Brent Musburger is starting to sound like that creepy uncle who's not allowed to go within 500 yards of a grade school." (@Jmack97fm)

"Brent Musburger is like that 70 year old guy who shows up at singles ministry thinking he's got a shot." (@MatthewBarnett)

Even Aaron Murray, the quarterback who recently announced he'll return for his senior year at Georgia, tweeted about Webb during the game. He wrote, "Aj McCarrons girlfriend needs to become a Dawg fan #dawgsontop."

At 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, Webb had surpassed McCarron in Twitter followers -- 104,487, compared to his 86,885.

Webb, who advanced to the top 10 in the Miss USA 2012 pageant, told us she first met McCarron in person when he attended this year’s Miss Alabama USA pageant, which was held Dec. 7-8 in Montgomery.

Prior to that meeting, they knew of each other due to a series of Twitter exchanges.

“I had not seen him (in person) until I went on stage and saw him in the front row,” Webb said. Since she lives in Los Angeles, Webb said she initially wasn’t too familiar with McCarron’s achievements on the football field.

After the pageant, their relationship progressed.

"It has nothing to do with the status,” said Webb, explaining why she’s attracted to McCarron. “He has such an amazing heart. He realizes that family and friends and the people closest to you are most important."
