Let the Oscar frenzy begin

Posted on January 10, 2013

I blame Daddy.

My father was a huge movie fan. In fact, when I was young, he managed a movie theater when we were stationed at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

Even when he was very sick, he delighted in going to the theater to see a movie. Any movie. The last one he saw was "Dances with Wolves." When he got home, he was raving about it. He loved it. I have never seen the movie. I'm not a big Kevin Kostner fan. I may have to see it one day.

This morning, the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards were announced. The telecast is 8 p.m. Feb. 24 on ABC-TV.

I used to host an Oscar party. I'd hand out ballots that people would fill out before the show began. The one with the most winners would win a prize. Usually a movie or a book. Because I was the one providing the prizes, they weren't big ones, of course.

Back then, Tom Fort was still in town and we would see at least one movie a week. Now, I'm lucky if I see the Best Picture nominees.

I may start the parties again. Maybe.

Here are the big categories and the nominees.

Best Picture "Amour" "Argo" "Beasts of the Southern Wild" "Django Unchained" "Les Misérables" "Life of Pi" "Lincoln" "Silver Linings Playbook" "Zero Dark Thirty"

Best Actor Bradley Cooper ("Silver Linings Playbook") Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln") Hugh Jackman ("Les Misérables") Joaquin Phoenix ("The Master") Denzel Washington ("Flight")

Best Actress Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty") Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings Playbook") Emmanuelle Riva ("Amour") Quvenzhané Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild") Naomi Watts ("The Impossible")

Best Supporting Actor Alan Arkin ("Argo") Robert De Niro ("Silver Linings Playbook") Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master") Tommy Lee Jones ("Lincoln") Christoph Waltz ("Django Unchained")

Best Supporting Actress Amy Adams ("The Master") Sally Field ("Lincoln") Anne Hathaway ("Les Misérables") Helen Hunt ("The Sessions") Jacki Weaver ("Silver Linings Playbook")

Best Animated Feature "Brave" "Frankenweenie" "ParaNorman" "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" "Wreck-It Ralph"

Best Director Michael Haneke ("Amour") Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild") Ang Lee ("Life of Pi") Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln") David O. Russell ("Silver Linings Playbook")

I do have one question -- Where's the love for my Russell Crowe?

The real questions, of course, are:

Who is wearing what designer? What jeweler will have the sparklers on which star? And who is bringing whom?

So let the frenzy begin!
