A Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy shot a motorist in his head Saturday after he refused to stop his vehicle in the 2700 block of Lee Road 243 in Smiths Station., Ala.

The man was transported in critical condition to The Medical Center in Columbus after the 10:47 a.m. shooting. He was treated for what appeared to be a gunshot to the head, Sheriff Jay Jones said in a statement.

The sheriff office has requested the Alabama Bureau of Investigation investigate the incident.

Jones said the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle after the tag matched one reported stolen to the Columbus Police Department in November. After the vehicle turned into a driveway, the sheriff deputy followed the vehicle into the back yard, stopped his cruiser and attempted to talk to the driver.

Instead of stopping, the driver steered toward the deputy and sped toward him. The deputy fired multiple shots into the driver’s side of the vehicle windshield after the driver refused the deputy’s commands to stop.

The oncoming vehicle then came to a halt. In addition to the suspect, a 7-year-old child who is not related to the suspect was inside the vehicle but was uninjured.
