2010: QB Nick Marshall, Wilcox County

ATHENS - Consider this possibility: Twice this upcoming season, Georgia could face an opposing quarterback it kicked out of its program.

We already know about Zach Mettenberger, who started this past season at LSU, and will likely be the quarterback when the Tigers come into Sanford Stadium on Sept. 28. In case anyone needs reminding, Mettenberger was dismissed from the UGA program after spring practice in 2010, after a couple off-field transgressions.

Now comes word that Nick Marshall, dismissed from the team last February after a dorm theft incident, has decided to sign with Auburn. Marshall, who played on special teams at Georgia in 2011, spent last season at Garden City (Kan.) Community College.

Marshall was a cornerback at Georgia, but he played quarterback at Garden City, and he told my colleague Aaron Brenner at the Ledger-Enquirer that he's "100 percent" playing quarterback at Auburn.

"That (spread offense) is what I'm made for," Marshall said of new head coach Gus Malzahn's system.

On a side note, I saw Marshall play quarterback at Wilcox County High School, and was impressed by his arm. It's not Tom Brady-like, or even Aaron Murray-like, but it's good enough, and combined with his athletic ability, I can see Marshall playing quarterback in the SEC. (And it's not like Auburn has many great options right now.)

A quick check of the schedule reveals no other former Georgia players primed to play quarterback for its other 10 opponents in 2013. Still, one such storyline in a season is quite interesting, and two ... well, that's probably unheard of.

Georgia plays at Auburn on Nov. 16, with the deep South's oldest rivalry taking place on the plains for a second straight year because of a quirk in the SEC scheduling process.
