Smoke reported at Waddell Elementary, no fire found

Published: January 15, 2013

Columbus Fire Department units responded to Waddell Elementary after employees reported smoke in the kitchen area.

"It was very smoky in kitchen area," said Shiann Williamson, Waddell Elementary school principal. "We did not see fire in the area, but we called to be sure."

Fire Marshal Ricky Shores said no fire has been found in the school, but some responders are remaining on school grounds to thoroughly check the area. Shores said the smoke could have been caused by something small, such as a burnt-up air conditioner.

"There was smoke in the kitchen, but they were unable to find the source of it so they're probably going to stay over there for a little while to make sure," Shores said.

No classes were disrupted during the incident, Williamson said.
