Need a reason to celebrate today? Monday, Jan. 28, is Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day.

An Indiana radio station started the celebration in 2001, the Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day website notes. The station hosted a Bubblympiad with events like a popping relay and sculpture and design contests.

Two New Jersey engineers invented Bubble Wrap in 1957. Originally, they were trying to make a plastic wallpaper with a paper backing. When idea didn't work, the product transformed into a cushioning packaging material.

Visit the Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day website to watch Bubble Wrap videos and play virtual Bubble Wrap games.

The folks behind the holiday sent us a handy kit for a Bubble Wrap popping contest.
