GAME NOTES: The Elon Phoenix look to stay hot when they visit Greensboro Coliseum for a Southern Conference tussle with the UNC Greensboro Spartans.
Elon enters the game riding a five-game winning streak and in first place in the SoCon North Division. The Phoenix were in action this past Saturday, claiming a 70-66 victory over The Citadel. That contest kicked off a stretch that will see the Phoenix play four of five on the road.
Meanwhile, UNC Greensboro will wrap up a season-long, five-game homestand tonight. The Spartans are 3-1 on the homestand after taking down Chattanooga on Sunday, 77-69. They'll begin a three-game road trip on Saturday, with all three of those games taking place in the state of South Carolina.
Elon leads the all-time series with UNCG, 19-13.
Over their last two games, the Phoenix have knocked down 25 3-pointers. They put up 32 attempts against Citadel and connected on 12 of those (.375). Jack Isenbarger led the way with a game-high 22 points and eight assists. Tanner Samson added 15 points, and Lucas Troutman finished with 14. Samson and Isenbarger accounted for nine of Elon's 12 treys to help keep the Bulldogs at bay. On the season, Troutman is shooting a healthy 53.7 percent from the floor and is averaging a team-best 15.4 points per game to go along with 5.8 rebounds. Isenbarger is tallying a shade under three 3-pointers per game and is averaging 14.9 points, while Ryley Beaumont rounds out Elon's double-digit scorers with 10.3 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per tilt.
Junior guard Trevis Simpson is the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, as he became the first player in the conference this season to score 30 or more points in consecutive games. Against then North Division leader Samford a week ago, Simpson set a season-high with 30 points, as he accounted for 22 of UNCG's 27 second-half points and each of the team's final 14 in an eventual two-point victory. Then, against Chattanooga, he tied the school's single-game scoring record with a new career-high of 41 points. He scored the Spartans' first nine points and went into the locker room with 27 at the half. Averaging 19.9 ppg, Simpson is the SoCon leader in the scoring category, while teammate Derrell Armstrong checks in with 15.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per tilt. Armstrong had a performance to forget against Chattanooga, as he shot just 1- of-11 from the floor and finished with twice as many turnovers (4) as points (2). However, with Simpson burying seven threes and generally scoring at will, Armstrong's subpar effort was salvaged.
The Phoenix have been hot of late, but Simpson has been even hotter. Still, the Spartans will need some other players to step up if they hope to take down the North Division leader.
