Five people were killed and two more injured Friday night in a head-on collision in Troup County, the Georgia State Patrol has confirmed.

Authorities suspect alcohol was a contributing factor when the two-car crash happened on West Point Road southwest of LaGrange at Old West Point Road, according to a statement from the state patrol.

Both drivers died in the crash. They are identified as Willie L. Hooks, 28, from LaGrange and Melanie Kay Lemmon, 23, also from LaGrange, according to authorities.

Hooks was driving a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass and was passing a vehicle in a no-passing zone when his car collided with the 1995 Pontiac Grand Am being driven by Lemmon, the state patrol reported.

Three passengers in Lemmon's car were killed. Two more passengers were critically injured and airlifted to hospitals in Atlanta and Columbus.

"Alcohol is suspected as a possible contributing factor and blood was drawn from Mr. Hooks to determine a blood alcohol content," according to a state patrol statement. Come back to Ledger-Enquirer.com for additional information as it becomes available.
