High school soccer: Hardaway boys top Brookstone on the road

On an exceedingly cold evening, the Hardaway boys soccer team stayed hot.

Behind two goals from Hector Reguero, the Hawks won at Brookstone, 3-1, on Wednesday to remain unbeaten on the young season.

“I thought we played well pretty much all game,” coach Rick Iden said after the victory. “We pressured the ball all night and did a good job staying with them.”

Iden said he thought the team was a little sloppy in its finish, but that he was just nitpicking after a dominating victory over a very solid opponent.

“I told the kids that Brookstone wouldn’t quit, and they didn’t,” he said. “That was a good team we beat.”

The Hawks (5-0) got out of the gate fast when, assisted by Jared Alamaza, Reguero picked up his first goal in the seventh minute of the game.

Starting fast was a major key to the victory, Reguero said.

“Getting the first goal is always important,” he said. “It gives us a winning mentality. Let’s us know we can do well against whoever we’re playing.”

Brookstone (2-3, 1-0) missed a chance to tie the game 10 minutes later when a shot on goal sailed just over the crossbar. In the 21st minute, the Hawks were able to take advantage of the Cougars’ missed opportunity when Tito Echevarria put one in the back of the net to give Hardaway a commanding 2-0 lead.

A Brookstone free kick, taken by Martin Ramos, cut the lead to 2-1 at the break, but Hardaway was again strong in the second half.

It nearly put in its third goal in the 45th minute, but Brookstone keeper Ben Holt headed a high shot, keeping it from sailing into the top of the net. Echevarria got a look five minutes later, but his shot was just barely saved as well.

Finally, in the 53rd minute, Reguero picked up his second goal of the game. Assisted by Echevarria, Reguero slid a shot past the keeper to give the Hawks an insurmountable 3-1 lead. Reguero had a couple of shots at the hat trick later, but came up just short.

Reguero said that he thought his team struggled early, but was able to pick it up as the game went along.

“We struggled on defense at first, but we picked it up,” he said. “Overall, I thought we played pretty well.”

Brookstone fell below .500 for the season, but coach Billy Byrd said the loss was more to do with the opponent than his team.

“They’re good,” he said of Hardaway. “That’s the best team they’ve had in awhile. They’re good in goal and (Reguero) is very solid, too. They’re tough.”

Hardaway plays again on Thursday at Callaway, while Brookstone plays Friday at undefeated Paideia.
