Albany edges Columbus Lions with late field goal

ALBANY, Ga. — Ryan Gates hit a 28-yard field goal five seconds left in the game to give Albany a 40-37 win over the Columbus Lions on Saturday night.

Columbus quarterback Marcus Jones, getting his first start, was 12-of-19 passing for 192 yards and four touchdowns before leaving the game in the final minute with an ankle injury.

Lions wide receiver Maurice Dupree had five catches for 127 yards.

Albany quarterback Cecil Lester completed just 17-of-37 passes and two touchdowns.

Columbus trailed 37-34 with a minute to play, but its drive ended with a Chandler Brooks' field goal for a tie.

The Lions will play at Alabama on April 6.
