Color Me Rad 5K: What you need to know about Saturday's race

ssorich@ledger-enquirer.comMarch 21, 2013

So, you bought your plain white T-shirt. Congratulations, you’re almost ready for Saturday’s Color Me Rad 5K.

The race makes its Columbus debut this weekend and registration has crossed the 4,000 mark, according to organizers. It’s part of a national series of races.

The draw? During the run, participants will be hit with blasts of color -- in the form of corn starch. “Be ready to have a great time,” said Elizabeth Hurst, vice president of community relations and marketing for Uptown Columbus.

Whether you’re a runner or a spectator, here’s a quick primer on Saturday’s race.

Can I still register?

Yes, but not online. You can sign up until 7 p.m. March 21 and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. March 22 at Big Dog Running Company, 1104 Broadway in Columbus. You’ll pay $50. Race-day registration will open 7 a.m. Saturday. A portion of race proceeds benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.

I signed up online. When do I pick up my stuff?

Organizers prefer that you pick up your packet during the aforementioned time frames at Big Dog, though packet pickup will be available on race day.

Where should I park Saturday morning?

Your first destination should be the RiverCenter parking garage in downtown Columbus. If that garage is full, organizers will direct you to another downtown parking garage. There’s no charge to park in the garages during the event. If you arrive later than 7:30 a.m., you should go directly to the TSYS parking lot (1600 1st Ave.).

Where should spectators hang out?

Hurst advises spectators to secure a spot at Woodruff Park, 1000 Bay Ave., which is also the starting point for the race. The course is 3.1 miles.

When should I arrive?

Organizers recommend arriving by 7:30 a.m., when officials will shut down Broadway. Race waves are at 8 a.m., 8:10 a.m., 8:20 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., though the 8:30 wave is sold out.

What’s the weather forecast?

Expect cloudy skies with the possibility of a few light sprinkles during race time, according to WRBL meteorologist Bob Jeswald. The race will happen rain or shine, Hurst said.

Can I run with my dog?

Sorry, pets aren’t allowed.

When will Broadway reopen?

Broadway will reopen by 10:30 a.m. Saturday or sooner, depending when the last runner crosses the finish line. If Broadway homeowners need to get out during the race, northbound Broadway will be open for traffic.
