Health-care insurer looking to hire about 200 in variety of positions

Those with their sights set on landing one of about 200 jobs available with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia should plan to be at the Columbus Career Center on Saturday.

The company will be recruiting from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Georgia Department of Labor center, 700 Veterans Parkway. Positions range from customer service and claims to training and other “back-office” operations jobs, with both entry-level and management spots up for grabs. Salaries will range from $11 to $15 per hour, depending on the job and experience level, the labor department said.

“We looked at the general hiring market. We also looked at the skill set of the people we have at the existing location,” Jennifer Wade, staff vice president of operations at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, said recently of the health-care insurer’s reason for expanding in Columbus and not one of its other locations in the state.

Basic criteria for applicants include a high school diploma or general education diploma, along with a least a year of experience in customer service, examining claims or dealing with policyholders.

“They must have keyboarding and personal computer skills, along with verbal, writing and problem-solving skills,” the labor department said. “They must also be able to work in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment, such as a call center.”

Resumes and a personal email account are required, the company said, with applicants expected to dress appropriately on Saturday.

Those hired will receive up to eight weeks of training in various functions, including processing health-care claims, phone inquiries, billing and working with clients.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia already has about 1,200 on its payroll in Columbus. Those include 700 at the company’s office complex on Warm Springs Road, with another 500 working from home.

Wade said the hiring push is aimed at getting staffers in place to handle a major influx of new insurance customers starting in 2014.

The increase is driven by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — also referred to as Obamacare — which mandates that every American have a health insurance policy or pay a penalty. Subsidies and tax credits will be offered by the government to help those who need assistance or aren’t covered by a company plan.

Blue Cross insures 2.4 million people throughout Georgia already. It hopes to add about 1 million more clients.

“Health care is complex as it is,” Wade said. “But when you’ve got people who’ve never had health insurance before, they need help with understanding where to shop (for a policy), and how they can help their parents, sisters, anybody in their family navigate through everything.”
