Columbus State faces Flagler in Peach Belt conference tournament

Mollie Russell named Peach Belt Pitcher of the Year

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Columbus State will attempt to defend its Peach Belt Conference softball tournament championship starting Saturday when it plays host Flagler at 1:30 p.m.

The Lady Cougars head into this year’s tournament as the No., 4 seed with a 36-16 record, 15-7 in the conference.

CSU has won 5-of-6. The Lady Cougars are 4-2 in their last six road games.

Flagler has won seven straight at home.

CSU won both of the meetings earlier this season in Columbus, 3-0 and 2-1, on March 17.

Armstrong Atlantic, the regular-season champion, will open the tournament against No., 8 seed Georgia Southwestern.

In the other two first-round games tofday, No, 2 seed Georgia College will face No. 7 Francis Marion and No. 3 North Georgia will play No. 6 USC Aiken.

The semifinals and finals will be played Sunday.

At the PBC banquet Friday night, CSU’s Mollie Russell was named the PBC Pitcher of the Year. Russell went 19-8 with a 0.98 ERA. She also had two saves.

Kristen Carr was named to the all-PBC first team as the designated player. She hit .290 with 10 homers and 35 RBIs.

Taylor Turner and Kori Waugh made the second team.
