Update: Glenwood, Hooper split; Game 3 Saturday

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerApril 19, 2013

Glenwood made it nine wins in a row with a 5-3 victory over Hooper Academy on Friday in the first game of the best-of-three first-round series the AISA Class AAA playoffs.

The game started almost three hours late due to the heavy rains that moved through the Phenix City area Friday afternoon.

In Game 2, Hooper surprised the Gators 5-3. Dylan Chamblee knocked in three runs for Hooper.

Tanner Knowles took the loss.

Taylor Davis and Chad Silvani had RBIs for Glenwood.

Game 3 in the series will be at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Pitching has been the Gators' strong point all year and the first game was no exception as Austin Thomas pitched a complete game, striking out 14 and giving up one hit and one earned run in seven innings.

"He has been our big game pitcher all year and tonight was no exception. It was cold and it was wet, but Thomas was dominant," Glenwood coach Tim Fanning said after the first game.

Glenwood scored three runs in the second after it loaded the bases with no outs. Catcher Logan Kiker's ground out scored the first run and CJ Cotton stroked a solid single to right for a 3-0 lead.

The Gators gave up two unearned runs in the third as the Colts scored two to narrow the margin to 3-2 and did it without the benefit of a hit, scoring on two errors, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

"We had one bad inning and that was it, the third. Otherwise, we played well and everyone contributed," Fanning said.

Glenwood widened the margin to 5-2 with three hits in the fifth. Kiker hit a booming double to the center field fence and Dylan Denny scored him with a single up the middle. Lawson Humphries single home Denny.

Hooper's Dezmond Howard got the only hit off Thomas in the sixth with a double in the gap and scored on an infield out. But Thomas came right back and struck out two batters in the seventh and the final out was a weak grounder.
