Glenwood baseball wins best-of-three series over Hooper Academy to advance to second round of Class AAA AISA playoffs

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerApril 20, 2013

Glenwood ended the ball game on a strikeout-throw out double play and with that defeated Hooper Academy in the rubber game of the best-of-three series in the Class AAA AISA first round of playoffs, 6-4 Saturday afternoon at the Glenwood field.

That means these two teams played seven games in the 2013 season and the record for both against one another was 3-3-1. The lone tie for both teams came in a tournament earlier in the year when the score was 1-1 after eight innings and the time limit stopped the game. Even the teams' colors are the same: orange, green and white.

"That's the name of the game, survive and advance," Fanning said after the game. "We had so many players to step up in the game that it's really hard to single out one."

Both starting pitchers, Walt Jones for Hooper and Chad Silvani for Glenwood, were out of the game by the fourth inning. Jones left trailing 4-2 after three and Silvani gave up back-to-back singles to start the fourth inning and was relieved by Lawson Humphries. Brandon Kicker came on for the Colts to start the bottom of the fourth.

In that fateful seventh inning, the Colts' Kicker led off with a hit and after an out, Slade Ivey followed with his first hit of the series. That brought up catcher Curtis Dorsey, who was 3-for-3 in the game and on a full count, struck out and catcher Logan Kiker's throw to third nabbed Johnathon Waite, the courtesy runner for Kicker for the final out.

Humphries collected the win with his relief work and was also the top hitter for the Gators, going 4-for-4 in the game. He also scored the team's sixth run in the sixth after doubling on Silvani's sacrifice fly in the sixth.

"That extra run sure helped in that last inning, being up two runs instead of one," added Fanning.

Glenwood's next opponent is Tuscaloosa Academy, the 2012 AISA runner-up to Pike on Thursday. It will be a doubleheader in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with the third game on Friday if needed.
