A 24-year-old Columbus woman was punched in the face during an assault Thursday in the stairwell at Springfield Crossing Apartments, police said.

The woman who lives in the 3320 N. Lumpkin Road building wasn't seriously injured in the 7:04 p.m. assault, but sustained scratches to the side of her neck.

Police charged Nicholas Boone, 25, with simple battery in the assault. He was released on bond from the Muscogee County Jail.

In a report, police said officers were called to the apartment building to check on a dispute. A woman who works for the Department of Family and Children Services was a witness to the assault. Two small children were present when the assault occurred, police said.
