A 15-month old boy died late Friday after the car he was riding in ran off Flat Rock Road and struck a tree, authorities said.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the child as Princeton Sagoe of Columbus. The child was taken to The Medical Center after the 10:55 a.m. accident near Flagstone Drive but was transferred with head injuries to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta. He was pronounced dead at the hospital about 11:24 p.m., Bryan said.

An autopsy may be performed on the child today to determine a cause of death, the coroner said.

In a report, police said the boy's mother Malinda Sagoe was driving a 2007 Chevy Malibu north on Flat Rock when she noticed the child was out of his car seat and standing. The car then swerved off the road and first struck a privacy fence before striking a tree some 400 feet from Flagstone Drive.

Bryan said the child had blunt force trauma to the head and may have struck the windshield of the vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation by the Columbus Police Department.
