High school football spring practice: An early look at Pacelli

dmitchell@ledger-enquirerMay 11, 2013

Team name: Pacelli Vikings

2012 record: 4-6, 1-6 Region 4-A

How finished in region: Seventh

Playoff result: Did not make playoffs

Key losses: TE/DB Jay Dawahare, OL Mitchell Torbert,

Key returnees: QB Wyatt Peterson, DT/DE Chris Rehak, DT T.J. Branscomb

My take: Pacelli lost six straight games to end its 2012 season after winning the first four. That sounds like a negative, but the season was really a success for the Vikings.

They remembered how to win and they displayed talent at a number of positions.

In the spring, they’ll look how to increase that small amount of success from last season. The Vikings lost a couple of key players, but retain even more. Rehak has the potential to be a star and Peterson is very effective at quarterback.

Couple Rehak with Branscomb on the defensive line, and Pacelli has the potential to win the game in the trenches more games than not.

It’s hard to say whether the playoffs are a reasonable expectation for Pacelli, but it’s certainly a possibility.

The key in 2013 will be taking non-region success and carrying it into their region slate. They aren’t Brookstone by any stretch, but they are steadily improving, and that’s important.

Expect Pacelli to continue to improve throughout the spring and into fall. A winning season is not out of the question.
