High school football spring practice: An early look at Spencer

dmitchell@ledger-enquirerMay 15, 2013

Team name: Spencer Greenwave

2012 record: 3-7, 3-5 Region 5-AA

How finished in region: Sixth

Playoff result: Did not make playoffs

Key losses: Andre Carter, Mark Moimoi, Blaze Coaxum

Key returnees: Damarkus Robins, Taravarska Davis, Richard Jones, Darrius Lightfoot, Douglas Turner, Triston Williams, Jayson Sims, Antavius Pritchett, Adrick Lee, Jasaad Graves, Deondre Hubbard

My take: Last season marked a new era for Spencer as it broke in new head coach Calvin Arnold. The team won only three games, but still played meaningful games late in the season, battling for the fourth and final playoff spot out of the region.

While that may be a realistic goal in 2013, Arnold indicated that the team wasn’t really worried about that just yet. In spring, its focus is simply to work on the fundamentals and basics of football—proper stances, blocking and tackling.

It sounds simple, but improvement in those areas will undoubtedly mean more wins for the Greenwave in the fall.

As it continues to put those key building blocks into place, the on-field success in games will follow.

I think the improvement is clear for Spencer. It only had a one-win improvement form 2011 to 2012, but the level of competitive play was significantly heightened. I think you can expect that trend to continue into 2013.

Will it miss a few key players? Certainly. What team won’t?

But, for Spencer, it’s more about the atmosphere and the expectations, which are improving by the day.

Will it win more games in the coming season? It’s hard to tell in the spring. There are other factors at work that could help or hurt Spencer’s season.

Like Arnold said, though, the only thing the team is concerned with is improving itself, and that’s a step in the right direction.
