Grumpy Cat has a movie deal, Entertainment Weekly confirmed Thursday. For the uninitiated, Grumpy Cat was one of the top Internet memes of 2012. Shockingly, the meme involves a cat who looks really grumpy.
In honor of the big movie announcement, here are 10 things you need to know about Grumpy Cat.
It's a "she."
It seems like we have a tendency to immediately identify dogs as males and cats as females. But interestingly enough, I often hear people misidentify Grumpy Cat as a male.
Her real name is Tardar Sauce.
You can also call her "Tard," the cat's owner tells Mother Nature Network. What's up with the name? As a kitten, her fur was speckled with dark spots, reminding the owner of the popular dipping sauce. And yes, it is supposed to be spelled incorrectly. The correct spelling is "tartar sauce."
She's just over a year old.
Tardar Sauce was born April 4, 2012, according to the aforementioned Mother Nature Network article.
She's not really angry -- most of the time.
The same article notes Tardar Sauce "has what looks kind of like an underbite," her owner says in the same article. That's a big part of what causes her angry expression.
How did she get famous?
Tardar Sauce "became a viral sensation after her photo was posted on Reddit last September," according to Entertainment Weekly.
She does the "Harlem Shake."
She has more than 950,000 Facebook fans.
So yes, you can officially hate yourself for not hitting the 1,000-mark. "Like" Tardar Sauce on Facebook by clicking here.
She attracts imitators.
My Twitter search for "Grumpy Cat" yielded a deluge of copycat -- pun intended -- accounts. Among my favorites: Redneck Grumpy Cat, whose recent tweets include, "We are never ever ever getting back together. GOOD"
She hangs out with funny men.
Will Ferrell and Jack Black will reportedly star in the Grumpy Cat film, according to Vanity Fair.
She's a mixed breed.
The official Grumpy Cat website notes, "She is a mixed breed; but looks to have some Persian, Ragdoll, or Snowshoe in her line."
