Col. Michail Huerter named as next garrison commander at Fort Benning

Col. Michail S. "Gus" Huerter, who has been deployed seven times for duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been named as the next garrison commander at Fort Benning, a post official said.

Huerter will assume command from Col. Jeffrey Fletcher during an 8 a.m. June 14 ceremony on York Field in front of McGinnis-Wickam Hall. Fletcher, a 1984 graduate of Kendrick High School, Fletcher is deploying to Afghanistan.

As garrison commander, Huerter will manage the day to day operations of the post by providing base operations, public works and family support programs for soldiers and their families. Over the last two years, the garrison commander has been a key figure in post plans for acquiring more training land, the upcoming furloughs of some 4,000 civilian employees and the possible loss of 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division from Kelley Hill.

Huerter is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Army War College where he earned a master's degree in Strategic Studies in 2012.
