Joe Tereshinski Sr., patriarch of a Georgia football family, passed away Sunday morning at the age of 89.

Tereshinski Sr. played on Georgia’s 1942 national champion team, and went on to an eight-year career with the Washington Redskins. He played defensive end. His sons Wally and Joe Tereshinski Jr. both went on to play for Georgia, as did his grandson Joe Tereshinski III, who opened the 2006 season as the starting quarterback.

Joe Tereshinski Jr. is Georgia’s current strength and conditioning coordinator.

A private family memorial will be held in Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Mary’s Center for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care, 1660 Jennings Mill Rd., Bogart, GA 30622.
