Dozen TSYS executives rise in the ranks amid flurry of promotions by credit-card processor

TSYS, the credit card and electronic payment processor headquartered in downtown Columbus, announced a dozen executive promotions Thursday.

“Each of these outstanding leaders brings a unique quality to TSYS that contributes to our overall success,” Troy Woods, TSYS president and chief operating officer, said in a statement. “Their years of service to our company and extensive payments industry experience allow us to provide our clients the finest products, service and overall experience.”

TSYS spokesman Cyle Mims acknowledged this is the largest flurry of promotions he has seen.

“We normally try to do them once a year,” he said. “But this is the most at one time that I can remember.”

The promotions did not include a replacement for Bob Evans, managing director of TSYS Europe, who died suddenly on May 11 while hiking with friends in California. He had been with the processor since 2001 and helped build the company’s foundation in Europe. His position has not been filled, said Mims.

“His tenacity and determination helped TSYS to become one of the most respected payment companies in Europe,” the company said in a brief statement after his passing. “Bob’s tireless energy, passion for the business and his loyalty to family, friends and TSYS will be sorely missed.

Here are the announced promotions, with a synopsis of each provided by TSYS:

Gaylon Jowers Jr., to senior executive vice president

Jowers joined TSYS in 1991 and in addition to his promotion to senior executive vice president, he also serves as president of TSYS’ International Services segment. During his tenure with the company, he has held several key management positions, including leadership roles in which he was responsible for the company’s debit, prepaid, loyalty, debt management, e-commerce, global sales, corporate strategy and marketing initiatives.

Jowers also serves on the board of directors for China UnionPay Data Services (CUP Data), TSYS’ joint venture in China; GP Network Corp., TSYS’ joint venture in Japan; and TSYS Managed Services EMEA, a joint venture between TSYS and Dimension Data of South Africa.

Mark D. Pyke, to senior executive vice president

Pyke joined TSYS in 2010 and in addition to his promotion to senior executive vice president, he also serves as president of TSYS’ Merchant Services segment. Pyke is also chairman of the board for Central Payment Co., a TSYS joint venture focused on direct acquiring.

Prior to joining TSYS, Pyke served as president of Bank of America Merchant Services in Louisville, Ky. Before that he held the title of chief operating officer and executive vice president for National Processing Company, also in Louisville.

Dennis Jones, to executive vice president of business operations, International Services

Jones joined TSYS in 2012 and oversees the operations and technology teams responsible for account migration, data center and facilities, customer care, technology development and production support within TSYS’ International Services segment.

Jones has led many large-scale operations in multiple countries across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the United Kingdom and the United States, managing portfolio strategy and performance, acquisitions and joint ventures, as well as sales and marketing. He has held senior executive positions at NatWest and subsequently RBS, including a two-year assignment as chief executive officer at RBS National Bank in the U.S. More recently, he served as president of the Neteller Division of Optimal Payments and managing director of Neteller UK.

David E. Wood, to executive vice president of business operations, Merchant Services

Wood joined TSYS Acquiring Solutions in 2008 as chief operating officer, and will now serve as the head of business operations for TSYS’ entire Merchant Services segment. He is a payments industry veteran, having previously served as a senior executive with Bank of America. He was responsible for its Bank of America Merchant Services operations in Louisville, Ky. Prior to that he held management positions in operations with Bank One.

Richard J. Machold, to chief audit executive

Machold joined TSYS in 2012 as assistant general auditor of TSYS, and will now serve as the company’s chief audit executive. He will be responsible for providing independent reviews and evaluations of the company’s operations, information systems, controls, major business processes and reporting functions in order to provide recommendations to management, external auditors and the audit committee.

Machold is a 27-year veteran of the payments industry and related businesses and has worked for several of the leading payments providers both in the U.S. and overseas. That includes serving as the head of enterprise risk for Invesco, a leading independent global investment management company, where he designed, implemented and managed the global enterprise risk management process.

Eric Barth, to group executive of product management, Merchant Services

Barth joined TSYS in 2010 and has led product management for the Merchant Services segment since that time. With more than 20 years of experience in the payments and financial services industry, Barth previously served as principal and co-founder of Payments Acquisitions Management, a management consultancy firm for payments-related businesses. He also served as senior vice president at Bank of America Merchant Services and senior vice president at National Processing Inc.

Wallace K. Brown Jr., to group executive and senior associate general counsel

Brown joined TSYS in 1995. He oversees legal affairs related to the North American segment’s business development and support groups, including customer and vendor relationships, data security, and protection and risk management.

Robert E. Leary, to group executive of business operations, Merchant Services

Leary joined TSYS in 2008 and will be the site leader with responsibility for business operations at the TSYS Merchant Solutions affiliate in Omaha, Neb. With more than 10 years of experience in the payments processing industry, Rob has a deep background in client operations and is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt. Since joining TSYS, Rob has led multiple quality initiatives and streamlined operations, which have increased client satisfaction scores.

Jody B. Lee, to group executive of Information Security

Lee joined TSYS in 2001 and is responsible for TSYS’ global information security to include information security architecture and engineering, threat management, vulnerability management, identity and access management, security consulting, and PCI DSS compliance.

He has more than 20 years of experience in eecurity and IT management in both financial services and manufacturing environments. He is a certified information systems security professional (CISSP), a certified information security manager (CISM) and a certified payment card industry internal security assessor (PCI-ISA).

Michael L. McKitrick, to group executive of Compensation, Benefits and Human Resources Technology

McKitrick joined TSYS in 2008 as the head of executive and broad-based compensation. He is responsible for developing and executing enterprise compensation, benefits and human resources technology strategies and program management. Prior to TSYS, McKitrick served in various consulting and HR leadership roles over the last 20 years, most recently with EDS and Fujitsu. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Susan M. Sheen, to group executive of marketing, communications and business support, Merchant Services

Sheen joined TSYS in 1998, and has responsibility for the Merchant Services segment’s marketing strategy, channel and product marketing, internal and external communications, voice of the customer initiatives, executive communications and strategic engagement for both team members and customers.

With more than 20 years of experience in the payments and financial services industry, Sheen previously held various positions at First Data Corp., ranging from sales and marketing to client relations.

Ian Thompson, to group executive of human resources, International Services

Thompson joined TSYS in 2011 as senior director of human resources for the International Services segment. He leads the International HR team, overseeing team members in 10 countries outside of North America and supporting executive leadership in driving international business forward.

He has more than 15 years of global senior HR experience, mergers and acquisitions, recruitment, retention, compensation and training. Prior to joining TSYS, he held senior HR positions in a wide range of industries, including positions at Norwich Union Life and Aviva Offshore Services.
