2 men gunned down in Phenix City

Two Phenix City men in their 30s were fatally shot early today during a dispute on Stephens Loop, authorities said.

Police have identified the victims as Phillip Demetrius McCoy, 31, and Peter Thomas Sanders, 39.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said one man sustained a gunshot to the chest and the second had multiple gunshots in the shootings which occurred sometime between 4:30 and 5 a.m. Both men were pronounced dead in the emergency room at The Medical Center in Columbus.

In a statement from Phenix City Police, officers were called to 76A Stephens Loop to check on a person being shot. Officers found McCoy who was transported by ambulance to the hospital. Police believe Sanders who was as taken by a private vehicle to the hospital was shot during the same incident.

McCoy was dead on arrival at the hospital and Sanders died in the emergency room.

Police said the shootings are believed to have started over an altercation between the two victims.

The bodies will be sent to the Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy, Sumbry said. Both deaths are under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Phenix City Police Department.
