Police and EMS responded to the Columbus Public Library on Macon Road Monday morning after a man attempted to hang himself in the first floor bathroom, according to a Columbus Police report.

Interim Director Wanda Edwards said the 58-year-old man was found on the floor by a patron shortly after the library opened. Police and EMS responded at about 10:30 a.m. and transported the man to The Medical Center, the report stated.

The man was a regular patron of the library, Edwards said.

Edwards said the library was able to continue operations while the man was transported.

"The staff remained calm and the customers, for the most part, didn't know what was going on," she said.

A condition status was not available from the Medical Center as of Tuesday afternoon. Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said Tuesday that the man is on life support.
