There are no finalists for the job of Muscogee County school superintendent.

In a meeting lasting approximately 90 minutes Tuesday evening members of the Muscogee County School Board met to discuss two candidates whom they interviewed in Atlanta on Friday.

After the meeting, board chairman Rob Varner said neither of the candidates is a finalist at this time.

In what Varner called an "energetic meeting," he said board members were able to delve further into the answers of the questions posed to the candidates in Atlanta.

"We really didn't have time to do that Friday," he said of that six-hour meeting.

Varner said that progress was made Tuesday but would not say whether either candidate had been eliminated.

He has described them as "two quality candidates."

Seven candidates have been interviewed since Susan Andrews announced her retirement in March, 2012.

Board members had unanimously agreed to try and hire the undisclosed black male candidate they interviewed April 28 in Atlanta but he turned down the chance to become the first African-American superintendent in the school district's history. Board members never said why the candidate refused to take the position.

That led to more interviews Friday and the latest meeting.

The race and gender of the candidates discussed Tuesday were not disclosed.

The meetings in Atlanta have taken place in the law office of Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough LLP where search consultant Glenn Brock is a partner.
