Police are awaiting autopsy results to determine what caused the death of a 57-year-old man who was found dead in the parking lot behind Greater Ward Chapel AME Church on Talbotton Road Wednesday.

Columbus police investigators determined that Rutherford's death was a homicide after he was found in the church parking lot Wednesday evening.

Columbus Fire & Emergency Medical Services received the call that Rutherford's body had been found around 5:25 p.m. At 5:45 p.m., Muscogee County Buddy Bryan pronounced him dead.

Police investigated the area near where Rutherford was found, including the area around his home on 28th Street.

The house is not far from the church.

Rutherford's body was sent to a crime lab in Atlanta for the autopsy.

Police Lt. John McMichael said Thursday afternoon that no new details are being released in the case. Determination of the cause of death is pending a completed autopsy, he said.

"I couldn't guess when that will be completed," McMichael said. "It could be days. It could be weeks."

Bryan confirmed the autopsy process began at noon. More information may become available today, he said.
