Defense calls first witness in Ron Blair murder trial

June 28, 2013

In the murder trial of Ron Blair, the first defense witness today testified that the victim, Keon Coleman, was seen with a gun before a shot was fired.

Brandon Allison, a 24-year-old inmate at the Muscogee County Jail, said he and two friends were going to Club 1244 in downtown Columbus on March 25, 2012 when they walked near an altercation between men at the corner of Broadway and 12th Street. There were two or three women and three or four men standing around as the argument became more heated.

“You could tell something was about to go down,” Allison told the court.

Allison said he heard Coleman talking to Blair before Coleman started gripping his pants. “I want to say he was grabbing a pistol,” he said. Turning to leave, Allison said he was 15 to 30 feet down the street when he heard a gunshot.

Allison said both men were aggressive toward one another before the shooting. “I heard Blair trying to calm the situation,” he said.

Although there was plenty of police activity on the street afterward, Allison said he continued to the club but didn’t enter the building. He also didn’t make a statement to police.

Under questions from prosecutor Larae Moore, she asked Allison about his jail cell 3B and Blair being held in 3A. Allison admitted to talking to Blair but said it wasn’t about the case.

It also was revealed that Allison decided to testify after the trial started this week. He had earlier told an investigator from the district attorney’s office that he wasn’t going to testify, but he changed his mind.
