Chattahoochee Valley activities: Fireworks, concerts, ice skating set for June 29-30

Celebrate Independence Day early at Fort Benning Saturday, June 29. The free and open-to-the-public event will include music, kids' activities and a fireworks show at about 10 p.m. Don't worry, you'll still have a chance to see fireworks on the Fourth of July at the Phenix City Amphitheater. The Moore Band will perform 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday with a fireworks display following the concert.

Here are some highlights of weekend events:

2nd Annual Firefighter Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. 5K: Race begins at Big Dog Running Co., 1104 Broadway at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 29. Day-of registration is $35.

Fort Benning Independence Day Extravaganza: 3-10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at York Field. The 34-foot airborne training towers will be open from 3-6 p.m.; the MCoE Band will perform from 5:30-7 p.m., followed by The Farm, 7:30-9 p.m. The MCoE Band will again play at 9:30 p.m. through the fireworks display scheduled for 10-10:30 p.m. Concessions, games, rides and giant inflatables will be featured. If weather conditions are poor, the fireworks display will be held at dusk on June 30. It's free and open to the public. 706-545-3328.

Uptown's Market Days: Purchase produce, crafts, baked goods and artwork by local vendors 9 a.m.-noon every Saturday along the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Broadway. 706-596-0111.

Saturday Drop-In Tours: Columbus Museum offers free guided tours of exhibits every Saturday at 2 p.m. Free. 706-748-2562.

Ice skating: The Columbus Ice Rink will be closed in July and August for repairs, so Saturday, June 29, and Sunday, June 30. are your last chances to skate for awhile. Public skating sessions are 4-9 p.m. today and Sunday at the rink, 400 Fourth St. Cost is $7, $5 for children 10 and younger; $3 for skate rentals. 706-225-4500.

Little River Band: The concert is at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 29. at the Phenix City Amphitheater. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $15 general admission, children 12 and younger are free with an adult. 800-514-3849.

Romeogre and Julie Etta: This humorous play, written by Jessica Stephens and Leslie Cardwell, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29, at the Family Theatre, 100 Hamilton Road. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. 706-366-7196.

Aflac Vacation Reading Program film festival: Watch "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (PG-13) for free at the Columbus Public Library 3:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 30. Visit cvlga.org for a list of future film screenings.
