Columbus State will open volleyball schedule at home Sept. 6

kprice@ledger-enquirer.comJuly 3, 2013

The Columbus State volleyball program has hit many milestones since it announced it would resurrect its volleyball program in March 2012. CSU discontinued its volleyball program after the 1981 season.

The school signed a coach, Casey Cornett, a couple of months later and signed its first six players in December.

The Cougars took another step Wednesday when they announced the schedule for the upcoming season.

CSU will open the 2013 campaign on Sept. 6 at home in the CSU-Hughston Clinic Invitational.

"I am elated to finally announce the schedule," Cornett said in a news release. "I have been anticipating our first match for a quite a while now and I'm excited to see how the girls will react playing together as a team.

"This schedule is full of

quality opponents to help us prepare for conference play. We need to take each match one at a time for us to have a rewarding season."

CSU will play 13 of its 30 matches at the Lumpkin Center.

As a member of the Peach Belt Conference, the Cougars will play 18 PBC matches.

The CSU-Hughston Clinic Invitational will last two days and will feature Fort Valley State, Limeston and Shaw University.

CSU hosts Shaw in its first game at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6. The Cougars play Limestone at 12:30 p.m. and Fort Valley State at 7 on Sept. 7.

The first PBC contest will Sept. 13 at Georgia Regents University in Augusta.

GRU was formed when Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences University merged.

The first home PBC match will be Sept. 27 against Armstrong Atlantic.

The PBC tournament will be hosted by Francis Marion on Nov. 22-24.
