Northern reigns in District 8 major and 10-11 baseball

The rain finally held off long enough for the final two champions of the District 8 Little League All-Star tournaments to be crowned on Thursday night.

In the major baseball (11-12 year olds) tournament, Northern beat American 2-1 to win the title.

Northern advanced to the state tournament, which starts July 20 in Richmond Hill, Ga.

In the 10-11 baseball tournament, Northern beat Peach 3-1 to secure the championship. Peach had beaten Northern earlier in the tournament, but Northern came back to beat Peach twice to win the title.

The 10-11 state tournament begins Saturday in Peachtree City.

Northern finished with four of the six District 8 championships as it also picked up wins in the major softball and 9-10 softball.

Those two state tournaments will be hosted by Pioneer (Britt David Park), beginning on Saturday.

American won the 9-10 baseball, and Pioneer won the senior softball. American will play in the 9-10 baseball state tournament in Carnesville. Pioneer will play in the senior softball state tournament in Athens.

Meanwhile, Phenix City is hosting the Alabama major baseball state tournament, starting Friday at Idle Hour Park. The Phenix City team received a bye in the first round, so it will not play until 6 p.m. Saturday.
