Jimmy Beck moves to within 2 of leader in state amateur


KENNESAW, Ga. -- Former Columbus High golfer Jimmy Beck moved to within two shots of leader David Noll Jr. on Saturday after the third round of the Georgia Amateur Championship, which is taking place at Pinetree Country Club.

Beck shot a 2-over 73 Saturday and stands at 3 over heading into Sunday's final round. He is in a three-way tie for fourth.

Noll, of Dalton, shot a 5-over 76 and watched his lead dwindle to one stroke. Noll is at 1 over 214 (67-71-76).

Two golfers are a shot back: Ridge Purcell of LaGrange (72-74-69) and Travis Williamson of Brunswick (71-72-72).

Cody Shafer, of Evans, had the best round of the day with a 66. he is four shots behind Noll, who has won the state amateur twice before.

Other local players include Jonathan Klotz (72-219, tie for 13th), Parker Derby (73-223, t-33) and Robert Mize (80-227, t-52).
