A 15-year-old boy has been charged in the Friday shooting of a woman on Dearborn Avenue after she discovered the teen inside her car, Columbus police said.

In a news release, police Lt. Debra Bohannon said the investigation into the 4:10 a.m. shooting led to the juvenile who also is a suspect in other break-ins.

The juvenile faces one count each of aggravated assault of a person over age 65, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of firearm or knife during commission or attempt to commit certain crimes, possession of a handgun by a person under 18 and burglary in the second degree. A hearing is set for 2:30 p.m. Monday in Juvenile Court.

The woman told police that she was in her kitchen when she noticed the car door open. Thinking her husband may have left it open, the woman went outside to shut the door.

She then saw the boy who stepped from the car and pointed a pistol at her. He ordered her to “get down on the ground.” The woman was about to comply with the gunman’s demands when the teen shot her in the left leg and fled.

Police said there were other break-ins in the area in which the juvenile also is a suspect. He was identified as a suspect later Friday morning and charged.
