Update: Northern and Pioneer softball teams open state tournaments with wins

The Northern Little League 11-12 softball team opened the state tournament Saturday with an 18-4 win over Elbert County. The game was stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule.

The tournament is being played at Pioneer Little League at Britt David Park.

Alexis Sibold led Northern, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Emily Davis walked four times and scored all four times. Alice Williams went 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Matti Trask went 2-for-2.

Haley Johnson started the game and pitched the first two innings. Kennedy Polhamus finished the final three innings to pick up the win. The two combined to strike out seven.

Northern, which is in Pool A, plays West Point at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. A win would give Northern the Pool A title and a berth in Tuesday night's semifinals.

The state tournament winner advances to the Southeast Regional in Warner Robins, Ga., on July 25.

Senior softball

The Pioneer senior softball team opened the state tournament in Athens with a 11-1 win over West Point.

Madison Wilson picked up the win. She also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Pioneer will face Macon at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Junior softball

The Pioneer junior softball team lost 9-5 to Toccoa on Saturday in Athens.
