High school notebook: Central's Johnson gets hit, stolen base at AHSAA North-South All-Stars

Central High shortstop Blake Johnson participated in two AHSAA North-South All-Star games on Monday in Montgomery, Ala., collecting one of the team’s three hits in a 6-0 loss to the North in Game 1.

Hitting leadoff and playing shortstop for the South in the opener, Johnson was 1 for 2 with a stolen base in the losing effort.

Game 2 did not finish in time for press.

Central will again be represented on Tuesday when Kaelen Scott plays in the North-South softball game at 7 p.m. at Lagoon Park in Montgomery. Scott, a captain for the Lady Red Devils in 2013, is a career .358 hitter with 24 doubles, 7 triples, 9 home runs and 88 RBIs.

Lady Red Devils basketball will be represented by point guard Jimecheia Banks and guard Kendra Fowler, while the Central boys send guard Devin Pugh for the North-South basketball games. Smiths Station will be represented by Michael Hardin on the boys side.

Girls basketball will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, while the boys will be held at 9 p.m. Both games will be at the Alabama State Acadome.

Smiths Station baseball coach to be selected today

Smiths Station will formally recommend its replacement for former baseball coach Clinton Britton today at the Lee County school board meeting. The meeting will be held at the county’s new Board of Education building on Society Hill Road.

The board will vote to approve the selection to make the hire official. School officials have not announced a name and said their selection will not be present at the meeting on Tuesday.

Spencer’s Eubaire wins Athleadership Grant

Spencer wrestler Tae-dashawne Eubaire was awarded a National Athleadership Grant sponsored by NCSA Athletic Recruiting and the NFL Players Association.

The grant is awarded to student-athletes who qualify based on leadership in their community, academic achievement, athletics and a required essay written by the student.

As a result of the selection, Eubaire will be helped by NCSA Athletic Recruiting to find a college that matches his academic and athletic achievements.
