Update: Northern opens Little League tournament with win; American falls in semifinals

The Northern Little League All-Stars opened the major baseball state tournament with a 1-0 victory over Newton County on Saturday morning in Richmond Hill.

Trent Grantham started and went three innings to pick up the win.

Colby Brabston finished the game. He had five strikeouts.

Grantham also drove in the only run, doubling in the first inning to score Austin Hicks.

Josh Evans and Joseph Crowell also had hits.

Northern will play Belvedere on Sunday at 5 p.m.

9-10 baseball

The American 9-10 team went into Saturday’s state semifinals undefeated, but it couldn’t beat Oconee County, losing 13-3 in Carnesville.

Lucas Botero and Aidan Buhr pitched for American.

Brandon Gates, Trevor Giles, Gage Chesser, Pate Stansell and Gray Voltz had hits for American.

American had also gone unbeaten in winning the District 8 title.

Oconee County will play Hart County in Sunday’s championship game.

The tournament ran two days longer than scheduled due to rain.
