Man dies after falling from tree

July 22, 2013

A 54-year-old man plummeted to his death Monday afternoon while cutting sections of a tree at 4425 Mereworth Court in Columbus.

Cleveland Wayne Moore Jr., an independent contractor from Dothan, Ala., was trimming trees in the backyard of the residence when the accident occurred, according to Muscogee Coroner Buddy Bryan. Moore had just cut a three-foot section of the tree. His safety strap broke and he fell 100 feet to the ground.

Bryan pronounced him dead 3 p.m. at the Medical Center.

“He died of blunt force trauma,” he said.

Bryan said he wasn’t sure if an autopsy would be done, and was still waiting for the medical examiner to make the decision. He said the man’s employment situation may be the deciding factor.

“If he worked for a big company there would’ve been workers comp,” Bryan said. “But he was an independent contractor working with a relative so there’s not a question of Workers Compensation in this situation.”
