Carver's Khane Pass talks recruiting, team goals for '13

Carver defensive back Khane Pass was taken by surprise when his name was included among ESPN’s top 300 prospects for the class of 2015 last week.

Considering his athletic potential and progress he’s made on the field, however, it’s understandable.

Pass spoke with the Ledger-Enquirer on Thursday about what it was like to be considered among the nation’s elite. Included in the conversation was his top five schools, which schools have offered him and a promise for a team that has beaten Carver in the playoffs the past two seasons.

Well, I know you guys have been practicing a lot. How’s the summer been going for the team?

It’s going good. We’re getting better every day. Everybody’s been working hard.

Ready to get the season started, I guess?

Definitely.

Let’s talk a little bit about the recruiting. The attention from colleges has really started to spring up for you recently. What offers do you have now?

I’ve got Clemson and North Carolina. I got them this summer.

How much does that motivate you when you start to see some teams paying attention to you?

It makes you work harder. You want the offer, so you work hard. I’m going to keep working hard until I get the school I want.

What school is that?

Alabama.

Everybody wants Alabama, right?

(Laughing) Yes, sir.

So you haven’t gotten an offer, but they’ve been looking at you?

Yeah, they’ve been looking at me.

Well, you’ve got two big offers. Do you have a top-five list, including schools that haven’t offered you yet?

I’d say Alabama, North Carolina, Clemson, Mississippi State and probably Auburn.

I’m sure you saw where ESPN ranked you among its top 300 prospects for the 2015 class last week. I think they had you at No. 203. Did you know that was coming, or did that take you by surprise?

It caught me by surprise. It was very cool. I liked it a lot, obviously.

What does that do for you as a player to know you’re in that group?

It helps me a lot. It makes me feel good getting rewarded for the work.

What do you feel like you have to do to keep climbing that list?

Just keep working, really. Just keep trying to improve everywhere every day.

Moving back to Carver real quick—what’s the goal for you and for the team this year?

For me, I just want to make plays. As a team, we want state. We got to get stronger as a team. That’s the only thing keeping us from being able to beat a Buford. They’re strong, but we can get them this year. We’re going to get them this year. We want another shot.
