Cates Culpepper tied for fourth in U.S. Amateur qualifier

ATHENS, Ga. — Former Brookstone and current Columbus State golfer Cates Culpepper is tied for fourth after shooting a 1-under 69 in the first round of a 36-hole qualifier for the U.S. Amateur.

A field of 128 golfers teed off Monday at the Athens Country Club hoping to earn one of four berths in the U.S. Amateur, which will be played at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Aug. 12-18.

The field was cut to the low 39 scores and ties and anyone with eight strokes of the leader after the first round.

Two other local players made the cut. Jimmy Beck, who recently won the Georgia state amateur, shot a 2-over 72. He is tied for 18th.

Robert Mize, Culpepper's teammate at CSU, is tied for 25th after shooting a 73.

Former Columbus High golfer Charlie Flowers missed the cut with an 82. Bobby Brent withdrew.

Augusta's Greyson Sigg leads after firing a 3-under 67. Sharpsburg's Gregory Young and Valdosta's Sam Straka both shot 68. Culpepper is tied with Austin Langdale of Townville, S.C.
