Happy August: 10 awesome things about August, including holidays and events

ssorich@ledger-enquirer.comJuly 31, 2013

Bring it on, August. Bidding farewell to July wasn't too difficult -- after all, I'm still a little bitter about Mother Nature's decision to rain on my Fourth of July parade.

But I guess it's time to move forward, which isn't too difficult because I'm convinced August will be the Best Month Ever. Here are 10 great things about this month.

Romance Awareness Month

What does this even mean? I have no idea, but it's one of the many distinctions attached to August. Don't know how to celebrate? Ponder the results of a recent Romance Survey suggesting 34 percent of singles find it most romantic when their date plans a surprise activity for the first date.

Country's Midnight Express 5K

It's one of the most popular events in the Chattahoochee Valley. You know the drill -- run a 5K race at midnight and eat a barbecue sandwich immediately after crossing the finish line. This year's race is Aug. 24. Click here to register online. Be there or be square.

National Mustard Day

Mark your calendar: This year, the party happens Aug. 3. Celebrate responsibly.

College football season

I moved here from California, but I'm certainly not naive enough to forget this August highlight. College football season starts in August, though you could argue the season is under way 365 days a year in the South. Here's a schedule from ESPN.

MTV Video Music Awards

This year's ceremony airs Aug. 25. The coolest thing about the show? Realizing that MTV still plays music videos. But Lady Gaga is also scheduled to perform the first single from her new album. Can we expect another meat dress? You decide.

Dragon Con

This event, billed as the world's largest fantasy/sci-fi convention, kicks off in Atlanta Aug. 30. Grab your lightsaber and learn more here.

National Simplify Your Life Week

Yep, this is apparently a real thing -- and it falls on the first week of August. Ditch the drama, throw away some clutter and say goodbye to your toxic friends. Feel better? I thought so.

National Panini Month

There's a month for everything, right? Sure, maybe the logic behind the distinction doesn't exactly make sense. But when hunger strikes, I won't ask too many questions.

National Middle Child's Day

Paging Jan Brady: The world isn't ignoring you after all. On Aug. 12, middle children nationwide will finally get the credit they deserve. Well, maybe. Learn more here.

Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival

End your month with this event, which kicks off Aug. 30 at Callaway Gardens.
