Weekend activities appeal to brides, history buffs and science-fiction fans

Run a 5K, shop at Uptown's Market Days and learn about naval history Saturday (Aug. 3) in the Chattahoochee Valley. On Sunday (Aug. 4), the Ledger-Enquirer sponsors the Ultimate Bridal Expo at the RiverMill Event Centre and a comic book show is set for the Coca-Cola Space Science Center. Here's a sample of activities happening this weekend.

Cool History: Naval Technology: The National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus presents the family-friendly event with hands-on technology activities, Captain Scatterbrains' Scavenger Hunt, a museum tour and a multimedia presentation on advances in naval technology during the Civil War. Activities are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 3). Free with admission, which is $6-$7. For details, visit portcolumbus.org or call 706-327-9798. A guided bike tour is at 11 a.m. and costs $10, which includes admission to the museum.

Audie Murphy 5K: The local chapter of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club hosts its second annual race at 7:30 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 3). Meet at Big Dog Running Company, 1104 Broadway. A 1-mile fun run and a timed 5K race will be held. All proceeds will be donated to Damascus Way. The 5K costs $25. The 1-mile costs $10.

Single Ticket Saturday: This is your first chance to purchase tickets to individual shows that will be performed as part of the RiverCenter's 2013-2014 season. Show up at the RiverCenter box office between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 3). A list of shows is available at rivercenter.org. 706-256-3612.

Visit Pasaquan: The wild and colorful world of the late visionary artist Eddie Owens Martin will be open for tours from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 3). Tickets cost $5; children 6 and younger get in free. It's in Buena Vista. 229-649-9444; www.pasaquan.com.

Uptown's Market Days: Purchase produce, crafts, baked goods and artwork by local vendors 9 a.m.-noon today along the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Broadway in downtown Columbus.

Saturday Drop-In Tours: Take a one-hour tour of the Columbus Museum's exhibits with a weekend gallery guide at 2 p.m. every Saturday. It's free. 706-748-2562, ext. 651. columbusmuseum.com.

Ultimate Bridal Expo: Brides, grooms and their families and friends are invited to meet with wedding vendors from around the region 1-5 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 4) at the RiverMill Event Centre, 3715 First Ave. A fall fashion show is set for 4 p.m. The first 500 people will receive a free gift bag. Expect free samples, food, door prizes and more. Cost is $3 for brides, $5 for guests. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Comic book show: Vendors will sell and showcase comics and collectibles 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 4) at the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, 701 Front Ave. Special guest artist Chris Hamer "Urbnpop" will be available. Cost is $4. ccssc.org. 706-649-1477.
