Hardaway's Desmond Barmore expecting big strides for Hawks

dmitchell@ledger-enquirerAugust 2, 2013

At 6-foot-7 and nearly 300 pounds, Hardaway offensive lineman Desmond Barmore presents an imposing presence on the football field. The senior offensive tackle will lead the way for an experienced offensive line and explosive running back in 2013, and he’s excited for the season.

He said the team is committed to improving and so is he, doing his part in workouts and trying to make it to the next level.

Barmore spoke with the Ledger-Enquirer on Tuesday about Hardaway’s chances this year as well as his activity in recruiting.

Tell me a little bit about the summer. What were you guys focusing on?

This summer, we had a new weight program. Our strength and conditioning coach really came in and changed the program around. The players have chosen to commit, and we’re all coming in early in the morning and working hard. That’s really the motto right no: Work hard.

What time have you guys been coming in the morning?

We just started coming in at 7 o’clock, but we usually started at 8. We’re starting at 7 now because we want to beat the heat out here.

I bet. It’s pretty hot.

(Laughing) Very.

Has there always been a good commitment in past years, or do you feel like the commitment to the program is better this year?

It’s been alright in the past, but people always wanted to do other things during the summer in the past. I think it really shows who works hard during the summer, and I think there’s been more commitment this year.

On the outside looking in, I feel like there’s a lot of excitement for you guys. What’s the atmosphere like right now?

It’s a great time to be a part of Hardaway football right now. We got good players on both sides, lots of returning players, great coaches. We should win a lot of games this year.

Is it playoffs or bust this year for you guys, you think?

It kind of is. We lost some close games last year. We lost by seven points to Harris County, and then they went on a run into the playoffs. We felt like that could have been us. We just didn’t finish. What happens happens. We have to finish.

What Harris County did that year, do you feel like that’s something Hardaway can do?

We do. We have a winning mentality right now.

So, where do you stand in recruiting? You obviously have good size.

I have five offers right now: Jacksonville State, Georgia State, San Diego State, Louisiana-LaFayette and East Carolina.

Hoping for others in particular?

I really want an offer from Georgia, Auburn or Alabama. SEC football is where it’s at.

They been talking to you?

Yes, sir. I’ve been talking to Coach (John) Lilly at Georgia and Coach (Kirby) Smart at Alabama. And I’ve been hearing from Auburn too.

Ready to get the season going?

(Laughing) Definitely. We’re ready to play.
