Update (11 a.m.):

A man was killed Monday night after he stepped out in front of a vehicle on Victory Drive near the access road to Levy Road, according to the Muscogee County Coroner's Office and a Columbus Police report.

Coroner Buddy Bryan said Tuesday morning that Samuel Eugene Weaver, 55, stepped out in front of a vehicle Monday night. A police report lists the time of the incident as 8:50 p.m. The cause of death was pronounced as blunt force trauma.

"From what police could determine, his contusions were caused by the windshield," Bryan said.

A traffic report released Tuesday at about 10 a.m. stated that the 28-year-old driver was traveling North-West on Victory Drive at about 45 mph in the center lane. Near the Levy Road access road, Weaver was attempting to cross the street. He stepped out in front of the vehicle and was knocked to the ground a few feet from the vehicle.

Bryan said when officers arrived to the scene, there was a strong odor of alcohol on Weaver's person.

Weaver was soon after transported to the Medical Center. Shortly after, he was pronounced dead.

As of now, Bryan said no charges are pending for the driver.

Bryan said the man may have been homeless. His identification card listed his address as the Homeless Resource Network on Second Avenue.

Correction: The exact location and age of the deceased have been updated.
